The Park District of Franklin Park is taking a major step toward sustainability and long-term savings by investing in solar panel installations at the Community Center, Franklin Park Ice Arena, and the Centre at North Park.
This environmentally conscious initiative not only reflects a responsible use of taxpayer dollars but also positions the district as a leader in clean energy adoption within our community.
A Strategic Investment for the Future
The total project cost of $1,332,446 is offset by more than $1,000,000 in anticipated tax credits and rebates—including a $500,000 federal tax credit, $159,299 from ComEd inverter rebates, and $554,057 in Illinois Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs). These incentives significantly reduce the financial burden and help ensure a fast return on investment.
By choosing to purchase the solar panels outright—rather than enter into a Power Purchase Agreement—the Park District retains full ownership and receives all the financial and environmental benefits. This approach is expected to result in $76,000 in savings in the first year alone, with projected total savings of approximately $1.9 million over the next 20 years.
Project Details and Impact
Once installed, the solar panels will reduce each facility’s energy dependence on the electrical grid:
-
Community Center: 51% reduction
-
Franklin Park Ice Arena: 42% reduction
-
Centre at North Park: 43% reduction
A total of 1,080 high-quality, American-made Q Peak Duo XL-G11S panels will be installed across the three locations, along with 13 inverters. General Energy Corporation of Schaumburg, IL is serving as the Construction Manager, with AC and DC components installed by T Construction and Ecolectric, respectively.
Benefits Beyond the Bill
In addition to energy savings and environmental impact, the project opens the door to community education. Residents, especially youth, will have the opportunity to learn about renewable energy and sustainability—sparking interest in green technologies and supporting future-focused educational programs.
The Park District of Franklin Park is proud to lead the charge in creating a greener community while maximizing the value of every tax dollar.
